Setting the record straight on Washington’s new primary

OLYMPIA — Washington citizens who receive a voter registration form in their mailboxes should only fill it out and return it if they are not yet registered to vote.

A voter registration form is attached to a brochure explaining Washington’s new voting rules for the Sept. 14 primary.

The attached registration form is to encourage citizens who are not registered, to register with the state and vote Sept. 14.

The form has no connection to the new primary rules.

Washington’s new primary does not require people to re-register to vote, nor does it require them to register with a certain political party by filling out that voter registration form.

The new primary does require voters to:

  • Pick one political party for the day of the primary only;
  • Only vote for that party’s candidates.

However, voters’ party selections will not be:

  • Documented by the state in any way;
  • Recorded on any kind of voter registration form.

Voters’ only connection to a political party is on the ballot itself, not by marking any kind of voter registration form.

The last day to register by mail to vote in the Sept. 14, 2004, primary was Aug. 14, 2004.

However, voters may still register in person by going to their county elections departments by Aug. 30, 2004.
