Kirk Werner takes top prize for eye-catching entry

Kirk Werner’s eye-catching design of tracks of the “people and critters who call Duvall home” was announced as the winner of the 2005 city Logo Contest at the Feb. 9 City Council meeting.

Werner, owner of Itchy Dog Productions, won the $250 grand prize for his logo entitled “For All Walks in Life.”

Werner said in his narrative that he wanted to emphasize the rural nature of Duvall in the design. He donated his prize money to the Glen Kuntz W.R.E.C.K. Center.

Runner-up prizes and $50 gift certificates went to Clare Chapple, Chapplesauce, and Diana Jetter. A special student award was given to Kelly Besmer of Tolt Middle School.

The City of Duvall Logo Contest began in September 2005. The Duvall City Council asked that logo submittals incorporate, either implicitly or explicitly, the phrases: Small Town Charm; Family-Friendly; Natural Environment; and Arts, Culture and Heritage.

The city received an amazing 50 entries, said City Administrator Doreen Booth.

Each entry included an explanation of the logo. “It was fascinating reading,” said Booth.

Eighteen of those entries were from students in Kate Elliott’s 8th grade class at Tolt Middle School in Carnation.

Councilmember and contest coordinator Dianne Brudnicki commented at the awards ceremony that the artists’ narratives provided a lot of insight into what Duvall’s identity is.

Brudnicki, owner of Northwest Art Center, will be teaching an art class for Ms. Elliott’s class to thank them for their entries. Art supplies for the class will be provided by the City of Duvall.

The remaining entries came from throughout the Eastside, with the notable exception of two entries from The Netherlands. A citizens’ committee reviewed the logos and chose the award winners.

“It was not an easy choice as all of the entries were wonderful,” said Booth.

However, the winning logo will not be the city’s official logo. Brudnicki and Werner are working together to create a new logo based on a collage of the different entries, said Booth, adding that the new city logo will be unveiled shortly.

Kirk Werner, Itchy Dog Productions – Grand Prize winner – Narrative (For All Walks in Life)

“This design emphasizes the rural nature of Duvall. Living in Duvall is all about seeing wildlife around us. We live amongst the critters that we see on a regular basis, and those that we rarely see, but know are there.

“Nature is all around us, whether we live in a subdivision or on acreage outside the city limits. It’s important to recognize that the critters were here long before us and we have to live in harmony with them.

“Earthy colors are used to further emphasize the natural surroundings of Duvall. The tag line, ‘For All Walks in Life’ is a variation of the expression, ‘For All Walks of Life.’ It literally refers to people and critters who call Duvall home, but also denotes that Duvall is a home for a widely varying population.”

Clare Chapple was a runner-up

Clare Chapple, Chapplesauce Design and Production – Runner-up – Narrative (Small Town, Real Life)

“These more detailed versions of ‘small town, real life’ show the community feel found in Duvall’s Old Town. The bench invites you to have a seat and watch the happenings in the village. It is a comfortable scene day or night. The little bird on the roof speaks to the rural nature of our town.”

Diana Jetter – Runner-up – Narrative (Wagon in Oval)

“I created this logo to feature a more historical view of Duvall. It features the wagon that is seen as people come across the valley into downtown Duvall. This logo represents something that is unique to Duvall. When somebody sees this logo, they will instantly be able to recognize the wagon as a part of Duvall.”

Editor’s note: Jetter did not attend the awards ceremony at the Feb. 9 City Council meeting.

Kelly Besmer – student winner – Narrative (A Charming Little Town)

Tolt Middle School student Kelly Besmer earned a special award for her entry, “A Charming Little Town.” On the right is City Councilmember Dianne Brudnicki.

“In my design for Duvall’s logo I chose to do a nature scene in the letters that spelled Duvall.

“I decided to do this type of design because I think of Duvall as a town with hilly landscape but also nice flat terrain for farming, with lots of forests and wildlife. I put a river in the picture to represent the Snoqualmie River and I incorporated lots of pine trees in the picture because Duvall is one of the few towns that still preserve lots of natural environments.

“I even put animals commonly found in Duvall like hawks, squirrels, bunnies, cows and trout because they are a big part of our community atmosphere.

“I also decided to show all the seasons in each letter. Like how it can be sunny with lots of pretty flowers in bloom and how it can also be beautiful when all the trees’ leaves are changing colors.

“Also, scenes in two letters show it can be very wet, cloudy and rainy out, too. In the background of the Duvall I put a big heart that said ‘A Charming Little Town!’

“I drew this in too because I wanted people to know that Duvall is not just a town out in the boonies with lots of wildlife. Duvall is a town that is friendly with lots of spirit and bliss.”
