Is Maltby the right site?

MXGP has applied for a permit to build a motocross race track here in Maltby. The actual address is 18827 Yew Way Snohomish, the site of a old gravel pit.

I have a copy of the plans and it is a full blown state-of-the-art race track (three tracks actually). I know that is not big news in itself. But this site is surrounded by homes. Many of us built our dream homes here to enjoy the peace and quiet of rural living.

The proposal states that operating hours would be until 10:00 p.m. seven days a week. Talk about your worst nightmare!

They are totally downplaying how much noise there will be. Our neighbors say they can hear the motocross races at the Evergreen Fairgrounds that are five miles away.

Who wants to live by a motocross track and listen to the shrill whine of motorcycles all day, every day?

And a lot of us are a stone’s throw away. I mean what’s wrong with a light industrial area like by the Evergreen Fairgrounds or way out in the hills by Gold Bar or something, not smack dab in the middle of Maltby.

All the neighbors and ourselves just received notices from the county yesterday informing us about the permit application. And everyone is upset and beginning to rally to fight this.

The quality of life here in Maltby is very desirable. The recent reports on property values show the Maltby-Clearview area as having the highest property values in the county (appreciating 36 percent last year).

If this track is approved, property values will plummet. As a licensed realtor, I can guarantee that the second this gets approved values nearby will drop by 100-200K. That’s if we can even sell.

Who will want to live here? You can be sure we’ll all get legal counsel to seek damages from the county.

There were no “Proposed Land Use Action” signs posted and the overwhelming sentiment is that they’re trying to sneak this by us before we can stop it.

I think a lot of the families in the area still don’t know about this and the true impact it will have. In fact we first heard about it because our neighbor has a brother who works for the county and tipped her off.

Here’s some of the key info:
Permit file number: 06-102142-LU
County project manager: Erik Olson (425) 388-3311 ext. 2646; erik.olson@co.snohomish.wa.us
Name of Permit Applicant: MXGP inc. 11411 NE 116th Pl., Kirkland, Wa. 98034
