Julie
Koler to address regional historic preservation
The Duvall Library’s Rose Room at 7:30 p.m.
on Monday, March 6 will be the site of Julie Koler’s
presentation to local residents and to the Duvall
Historical Society on the current thinking of
county officials relative to historic preservation
in the region. A member of the staff of the King
County Historic Preservation program, Julie has
long played an important role in Duvall’s
heritage matters. Late in December, for instance,
the City of Duvall and the Duvall Historical Society
learned from her office that the Dougherty Farmstead
has received official listing on the National
Register of Historic Places. In the words of this
listing the “Farmstead is historically significant
for its direct association with the early settlement
and agricultural development of the Snoqualmie
River Valley.” Julie will discuss additional
approaches to preserving the history of the region.
Everyone is invited to attend.

Swil Kanim celebration and a film about
the Native American experience
On Saturday, March 4, Miller’s in Carnation
will host a special evening to celebrate the
first anniversary of Swil Kanim’s performances
there. Swil Kanim is an entertainer who weaves
stories, inquiry, heart and his violin into
an evening in support of creative expression.
Early last year Bob Antone of North Bend, a
musician and student of Native American culture,
introduced Swil Kanim to Lee Grumman. Ms. Grumman
heartily welcomed Swil Kanim and settled on
the first Saturday of each month for his performances.
In the past year a regular following has grown,
bringing in folks from as far as Olympia and
Port Townsend. To celebrate this first anniversary,
Miller’s will present The Business of
Fancy Dancing, a film by Sherman Alexie (Smoke
Signals). The film describes the different directions
that two childhood friends took after growing
up on the “rez.” One of them, who
has made a life in the white world, returns
to the reservation for the funeral of his friend
“Mouse,” played by Swil Kanim. Swil
Kanim composed and performed the violin music
for this central role. The film starts at 6:30
p.m., followed by dessert and coffee at 8:15
p.m. and Swil Kanim’s performance at 8:30pm.
Kanim has invited other actors and people who
helped make the film. For more information,
call 425.333.5007 or email lee@millersarts.
