Apathy is amazing

This is to let Elaine Lee of Woodinville (Letter to the Editor, Feb 26, 2006, “Litter”) know that she is not totally alone in her concern about the marring the spectacular Washington countryside. My neighbors and I pick up mounds of trash on our walks in our Bothell neighborhood. Warning signs mean nothing to these thugs. “No Dumping” signs are posted, yet the gullies are strewn with major appliances, furniture and yard debris.

Besides being totally perplexed by the ignorance and disrespect of the litterers, I am amazed by the homeowners who are apathetic about the trash on and near their own property. Many people thank us as they see us picking up the debris. The best thanks that I could get from others are for them to carry a trash bag on their walks. I know that our law officers have better things to do than stake out these vandals, however in light of the many empty liquor containers that we find on a daily basis, there is a more serious crime going on than just littering.

I would love to hear from other concerned citizens: janet_broadus@hotmail.com.
