A land lost

I would like to tell you of a little known secret place in Woodinville. This little area is nestled among the banks of the Sammamish Slough in the southern side of town. To those of us that live there, it is known as Redwood Village, a little settlement of 40 townhomes.

I happen to be one of those that are lucky to call this place home.

I say lucky, because this is one of the last places in this area that we can get up in the morning and open our eyes to sights that other people can only dream about.

No where else in Woodinville can one watch a bald eagle make its daily flight along the banks of the slough looking for its next meal.

From my window and from my deck, I am blessed to watch this and much more — like hearing the call of the family of red-tailed hawks as they catch a thermal and soar into the sky until you can no longer see them.

Then there are the many different types of ducks that use this body of water for their livelihood, not to mention the geese that call this special place home.

There is also the majestic great blue heron that stands silently on one leg, searching the still waters for another meal.

We even have a family of otters that call this area home. One can become spellbound with these antics.

We also have deer, raccoons, rabbits, quail, bullfrogs, and many others of God’s creatures, including the wily coyote.

Where else can one be sung to sleep by these creatures of the night? Sometimes they even try to harmonize with the wise old owl that inhabits this wonderful place.

Now the big developers have discovered this small area of Woodinville. Their big dream is to make money off this special place of ours. They cannot see this as we of Redwood Village see it.

All they can see is condos, wineries, stores, restaurants, parking lots, jamming hundreds of people into a few acres and saying, this is what we really want.

Why can’t these people realize that there are places to build and places not to build their small cities on?

Our city fathers have told us that they rezoned this area of Woodinville so that building here will be controlled, but they forgot to look at a map. All I can see is that on all four sides of this area is open King County land.

Does the city really think they can control this out of control growth? Please, for our sake and the sake of Woodinville, do not let this last area of our fine city be made into another blight on this land of ours.

We don’t need it and neither does Woodinivlle.
