| Get
out those old Judas Priest and Styx T-shirts. “Buttrock
Suites,” a collection of modern-dance
works choreographed to the raunchy, repetitive
strains of vintage hair-metal bands such as
Van Halen, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, AC/DC,
Ozzy Osbourne and Bon Jovi, is coming to the
Cedarcrest Performing Arts Center on April
29 at 7:30 p.m.
Producers Diana Cardiff, Matt Mulkerin,
Jana Hill and Bob Gregory created this hybrid
of satire, physical comedy and contemporary
dance. Some of the numbers are spoofs
of the genre, complete with spandex pants,
big-hair wigs, and fog machines. Others
are more abstract takes using modern-dance
techniques and even cheerleading.
“It’s a nice break from the
more serious dance we do,” said Cardiff
in an interview with Seattle Weekly reporter
Lynn Jacobson. “It’s
a guilty pleasure.”
Dancer Bob Gregory adds, “You’re
fronting your favorite band. Who wouldn’t
want to do that?”
When the company first performed “Buttrock
Suites” in 2004, the show played to
sold-out audiences all three nights. They
followed up with “Buttrock Suites II,
Sweeter” in 2005, which ran for two
weekends, and, once again, every show sold
out. Last September, their Bumbershoot
performance filled the Bagley Wright Theater
with an energetic audience that got in on
the joke by wearing old Scorpions and AC/DC
T-shirts.
