Jeff
Wilken of Woodinville has been selected for
membership in the National Society of High
School Scholars. Wilken is a student at Bellevue
Christian High School.
Sgt. Gabriel C. Steele,
the son of Ron E. Steele of Burlington, Iowa,
and Teresa Prior
of Bothell, has been assigned to the U.S.
Army Recruiting Station in Aurora, Wash.
At their April meeting, American Legion,
Bothell Post 127, selected Preston Scheid
Legionnaire of the Year. Scheid has been
an active member of the post serving as commander
and raising funds for veterans’ programs
and the V.A. Hospital.
Katie
Rivard graduated with the inaugural
class of Olin College of Engineering, in
Needham Mass., on May 21. She is a 2002 Woodinville
High School graduate and Washington State
Scholar. Katie will be working at Olin for
the two months prior to beginning her robotics
fellowship studies at CMU’s grad school.
(Pittsburgh Penn.) When not writing code
or training new students in the idiosyncrasies
of the robotic tractor they’re designing,
Katie right brains with dancing, knitting,
fencing, singing, baking, and this spring
she starred in Olin’s musical comedy,
The Thing About Men.
Aaron Mead, son of Bill and Candy Mead,
former residents of the Woodinville area,
was named to the Dean’s List for the
2006 spring quarter at Hillsdale College
in Michigan.
On May 12 Lindsay Kristine Mercier (WHS ’02)
graduated from Arizona State University with
a bachelor of science in kinesiology. Mercier
graduated Magna Cum Laude and will continue
her education in Denver at the University
of Colorado Health Science Center in pursuit
of a physical therapy degree. Her parents
are Terry and Karen Mercier of Woodinville.
The following undergraduate students have
qualified for the Dean’s Honor List
at Eastern Washington University for winter

Danyelle Harp, 14, of Woodinville, won an
award through the American Junior Paint Horse
Association’s (AjPHA) 2006 National
Art Contest. Members of AjPHA submitted original
works of art portraying American Paint Horses
to be considered for the contest. Harp placed
third in the 10-14 Age Division and received
a $25 gift certificate and mouse pad.
Sara L. Walsh, Woodinville, received a bachelor
of science degree in merchandising management
from Oregon State University June 18.
The University of Idaho has offered individual
scholarship awards for the 2006-07 academic
year to the following area students: Bothell — Megan
Joy Copenhaver, Richard Apollo Fuhriman,
Kevin Allen Mayerchak, Elisabeth Kohga Nelson,
Anthony Paul Portolese and Tayah Elizabeth
Renfro; Snohomish — Rowan Caitlin Coughlin,

Casey Kellogg, Snohomish, received a Bachelor
of Arts in Education and Genevieve Spiller,
Woodinville, received a Bachelor of Science
from Eastern Washington University at the
end of winter quarter 2006.
Two Bothell boys were recently awarded the
rank of Eagle Scout. Michael Call is 15 years
old and attends Canyon Park Junior High.
Last fall he completed building railroad-tie
stairs on the south side of Bothell High
School. These stairs can be used as an emergency
exit to the street. He is the son of Bob
and Julie Call. Taylor Wilson of Boy Scout
troop 555 also has completed the requirements
to receive his Eagle Scout Award. For his
project Wilson and his fellow scouts spent
several days last summer painting a yellow
leading edge on the stairs surrounding W.A.
Anderson School in an effort to improve their
visibility and safety. A sophomore at Bothell
High, he is an honor student, runs cross-country,
plays on the basketball team and is in the
band. He is the son of Leslie and Shea Wilson.
Both boys will have a Court of Honor July
6 at LDS Church in Bothell.
Bothell High School students Blake Medhaug
and Marissa Hackett have received the United
States Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete
Award.
