HomeStreet Bank announced the six winners of the HomeStreet Bank Small Business Spotlight Awards, offered in conjunction with KOMO 1000 News Radio (KOMO). The program recognizes six small Puget Sound-area businesses (100 employees or less) that demonstrate significant community involvement and are a great place to work.

Representatives of the six winning businesses attended a special evening of baseball in a luxury suite at Safeco Field on July 26, 2007 and are being profiled on a KOMO News Radio Small Business Spotlight segment and recognized on the KOMO and HomeStreet Bank Web sites. The 2007 Small Business Spotlight Awards winners are:

Stokes Lawrence, P.S. (Seattle) – Stokes Lawrence law firm treats its employees with monthly bagel days and organic fruit days, catered staff meetings, and an annual staff appreciation week that includes a certificate for extra time off. The firm offers employees a 401(k) with a company match, an employee assistance plan and a commute subsidy. Several of the lawyers donate their time to the Seattle Neighborhood Legal Clinic.

Tangerine Travel (Kirkland) – Tangerine Travel offers employees a full range of health and time off benefits, a 401(k) plan and access to financial counseling and planning services. Tangerine partners with the American Heart Association and Easter Seals and began a Children’s Hospital Guild in 2005, for which they have raised nearly $36,000 in two years.

Saybr Contractors, Inc. (Tacoma) – Employees receive a full range of benefits, access to an employee assistance program, and are acknowledged through a variety of annual employee events and internal rewards. Saybr is actively involved with Rebuilding Together and Habitat for Humanity, and the owner is involved with the professional development council, diversity committee and other areas of the Associated Builders and Contractors.

Johansen Mechanical, Inc. (Woodinville) – In addition to medical and dental benefits, the company is committed to having a safe and fun place to work. Employees are rewarded with tickets for their families to a variety of events such as Aqua Sox games and other sports and social events. The company sponsors an annual company fishing trip to Lake Chelan as well as family holiday parties. Johansen is a winner of the “family friendly” workplace safety award from the Association of Washington Businesses and rewards employees for helping to perpetuate an injury-free workplace.

PCSI Design, Inc. (Bothell) – This 18-person product design and engineering firm focuses on challenging and supporting employees to work at the peak of their capabilities and take on leadership roles both at work and in the community. Benefits include paid time off and a 401(k) plan. The owner contributes many hours mentoring Everett Community College students as well as those from Snohomish County high schools, and is involved in the NW Minority Business Council and other community service organizations.

BabyLegs (Seattle) – This two-year-old company has maintained its commitment to a family-friendly workplace, one that accommodates children, babies and pets and supports flexible work arrangements; concurrently, it has experienced tremendous growth nationally. Not only does BabyLegs donate time, money and products in support of local community organizations, it carries on several activities in Uganda including supporting an orphanage and a university, and working with a factory to produce organic, socially responsible textiles. On the home front, BabyLegs is strongly involved with issues pertaining to the environment and sustainability.

Businesses of fewer than 100 employees, located in the greater Puget Sound area between Marysville and Olympia, were invited to apply for the awards. They were asked to include a description of their involvement in their community and ways in which they support their employees, such as through education benefits or providing a family-friendly work culture.
