Moira Corrigan of Carnation finds homes for retired greyhounds.
There are no more greyhound race tracks
in the Pacific Northwest.
The last one closed a few years ago in Portland.
However, greyhound racing is still very much
alive and legal in dozens of states across
the country.
Numerous farms exist where these dogs are
bred for speed and then brought to the tracks
to race, usually when they’re 18 months
old. Their use for racing is often very short
because the lifestyle can be harsh on their
bodies. When they get injured or cease to win,
the dogs are retired. This normally occurs
after just a few years in this environment.

An
artist’s rendering of Woodinville’s
new mixed-use building under construction
across from City Hall.
The Arbors of Woodinville has been a labor
of love for local builder Dave Maurer, owner
of Playacom LLC.
Maurer set out to create Woodinville’s
first mixed-use building with the intention
of helping to change the face of the city’s
downtown corridor. When completed, the 45-foot
tall, five-story, 50,000 square-foot building
will house retail, office and residential space.
“I had been looking to do something
that was mixed-use because I see this type
of construction as the future of Woodinville,” comments
Maurer. “I came upon this lot across
from City Hall that has unobstructed views
of Mt. Rainier and I thought it would be the
perfect site.”
