Mission accomplished

Bothell Science Olympiad spent this year on a mission: The Pursuit of Nationals.

On April 5th, 2008, the mission was accomplished. BHS earned first overall at the Washington State Science Olympiad Finals, and an invitation for the second time to the National Science Olympiad Finals to be held May 29-31, at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The Battle

The Leota Jr. High ABS will host a Battle of the Bands at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, in the school gym, 19301 168th Ave. N.E., Woodinville. Four student bands will step up to the microphone to play anything from rock to hip hop. The whole community is invited.

School Board approves 2008-09 budget reductions

The Northshore School Board finalized 2008-2009 budget reductions at its April 22 meeting. Cuts total roughly $3.4 million.

“The board took action on the five remaining budget reductions it has been considering since January,” said School Board President Cathy Swanson.

She said those present at the meeting expressed “a very big disappointment” for the classified staff cuts. She called the reductions “sad and difficult to make,” but necessary.

Music and art blend in evening at CHS

When a group of teachers get together with a passion for the arts and their students, combining music, singing and beautifully created paintings, drawings and various other artistic mediums, the end result is nothing short of spectacular … at least that was one of the comments shared by parents and community members who attended the special event of “All That Jazz” earlier this month at Cedarcrest High School.

Grand opening for new Fall City Library set for May 3

Day-long celebration begins at 10 a.m.

To mark the grand opening of the new 5,000 square-foot Fall City Library, a community ribbon-cutting celebration and open house will be held Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m. at the library, 33415 SE 42nd Place. The public is invited to join community leaders, library staff, architects, builders and residents in celebrating the occasion.

To commemorate the new library, local dignitaries will join KCLS director Bill Ptacek for a special ribbon cutting ceremony. Once the doors to the new library are officially open, the public will be invited inside to tour the new community building. A Latino music performance and children’s program are planned for later in the afternoon.

Good news, bad news at Duvall City Council meeting

There was good news and there was bad news, according to Cari Hornbein, addressing the City Council at the April 24 meeting.

Hornbein, the City of Duvall’s planning director and City Hall administrator, started with the bad, stating that the long-awaited new associate planner, who had been lined up and ready to start helping with the department’s workload, had been “snatched away,” accepting another position instead, “which leaves us back at square one.”

The good news was that the CamWest and the Lake Washington Technical College property had closed, with the exception of a five-acre parcel that would close in July, for capital gains reasons.
