Winter Solstice Celebration

Friday, December 22, 2006
7:30 PM

It is no coincidence that almost every religious tradition chooses late December for celebrations of light. Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year when the sun’s light shines its weakest on our hemisphere. The Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church, (WUUC), is hosting a celebration of the return of light that follows this long night – which is an open and welcoming celebration to all.

The movement of the Earth around the Sun is a cycle that has gone on for billions of years and will continue for billions more. The changing face of Nature as a result of this oscillation is something that cannot be captured by numbered and named days on the calendar. All such numbers and names are culturally derived ornaments that we place upon the Tree of this cycle in order that they may regulate and regiment our ordered lives and measure our economic activities.

The Winter Solstice is a moment in this cycle when the light of the Sun spends the least amount of time with us. The days are the shortest and the nights are the longest; this was when the vulnerability of our ancestors to the cold and dark of winter was felt most strongly.

The Winter Solstice, itself, is the moment when the time of increasing darkness changes to the time of increasing light. The fear that the Sun might never return and then great joy when it became apparent that it was returning made this a momentous time for our pre-historic ancestors.

These things are still remembered, but very dimly, in our modern celebrations of the holiday season. Many people will spend the Winter Solstice unnoticed, pushing through crowds of shoppers at the mall. WUUC invites everyone to take a break from hectic holiday activities and experience a more ancient, grounded celebration of this season.

Come celebrate the returning of light at this Earth-based Winter Solstice Celebration on Friday, December 22nd at 7:30 p.m. at Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church, 19020 Woodinville-Duvall Road, across from Cottage Lake Park in Woodinville.
