The FUNDAY MONDAY group at Wooden Cross Lutheran Church participated in the Heifer International Read-to-Feed program.

During November and December, children from Wooden Cross Lutheran Church’s FUNDAY MONDAY group participated in the Heifer International Read-to-Feed Program.

Heifer International is a non-profit organization that works to end world hunger and save the earth through the gift of farm animals and training.

For almost 60 years, Heifer International has helped well over four million impoverished families in 128 countries move away from poverty and toward self-reliance.

Instead of providing families in need with a non-renewable source of food, Heifer International provides a living loan of an animal and extensive training in animal care, community development and earth friendly farming practices. The animal provides many benefits for the family, such as milk, eggs, wool, fertilizer, etc.

A cornerstone of Heifer International is passing on the gift. Families who receive an animal repay the loan by passing on one or more of their animal’s offspring to other families in need. These families in turn pass on the gift to another family. Essentially, one gift multiplies throughout the community.

The Read-to-Feed Program was supported by congregational pledges for every ½ hour the children collectively read.

The original goal of the Wooden Cross FunDay Monday Children was to raise $500 to purchase a heifer for a struggling family.

The participating Wooden Cross Children collectively read a total of 366 ½-hour segments. This number “wildly” exceeded expectations. The children raised enough money through reading to purchase an “Ark” full of animals for these families!

The Wooden Cross FUNDAY MONDAY Program is a weekly afternoon children’s fellowship for children in the community kindergarten through 6th grade.

FUNDAY MONDAY meets Monday afternoons from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Activities include crafts, games, Bible stories, movies and ministry projects. Dinner is included.
