Friends and relatives on both sides of the Atlantic gathered in Gütersloh, Germany, for the July 27 wedding of Nadine Borchardt and Scott Grimm.
Guests were treated to a four-day celebration to enjoy the area sights culminating in the lovely civil ceremony in a city hall from the 17th century followed by the beautiful church ceremony the next day.
The bride is the daughter of Michael and Erika Borchardt of Gütersloh and a graduate of Bielefeld University (BA) and Humboldt University, Berlin (MA), where she is currently completing her Ph.D in African languages and linguistics.
The groom is the son of Cheryl and Lawrence Grimm of Woodinville and a 1994 graduate of Woodinville High School, Columbia University, N.Y. (BA), University of Amsterdam, Netherlands (MSc.), and Stanford University (Ph.D in linguistics). The couple met in Ghana, Africa, in the summer of 2008. Nadine was teaching at a summer school for documentary linguistics while Scott happened to be researching a Ghanaian language in the same coastal town. The summer meeting led to their trans-Atlantic courtship. Following a honeymoon through Thailand and Cambodia, the couple returned to Barcelona, Spain, where Dr. Grimm is completing a post-doctoral research position at the University Pompeu Fabra, during which time Mrs. Grimm will complete her fieldwork in Cameroon for her Ph.D.
After the New Year, the newlyweds will make their home in Rochester, N.Y. where Scott will begin his position of assistant professor of linguistics at the University of Rochester as Nadine completes her Ph.D.
