Get your Teens in the Kitchen this Summer at 21 Acres

Are you looking for something fun for your teenager to do this summer? In addition to hanging with their friends, encourage them to learn some new life skills and register them for a cooking class at 21 Acres. Get them ready to help lend a hand in the kitchen on those busy weekday evenings once school starts again in fall. The “Cultivating Cooks” series of classes are offered on five Tuesday evenings in the 21 Acres Kitchen throughout the months of June, July and August from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and are geared for teens ages 12 through 19.

teensinthekitchenIn Cultivating Cooks: 101 students will learn the basics of cooking seasonally. In the five-class course, hands-on kitchen and cooking skills will be taught. Participants will prepare, cook and enjoy their creations at the end of each class. The emphasis will be on seasonal, organic, local and sustainable food. Dates are June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29 and August 12. Classes are: 1. Basic knife skills; 2. Breakfast of champions; 3. Baking, frying, boiling, sautéing, blanching; 4. Food groups: fruit and vegetables, dairy, meats/proteins. 5. Iron Chef Competition, the final class in the course. Fee for the series is $89 per person or $79 for 21 Acres’ members.

Cultivating Cooks: 201 is intended for students who have completed a previous introduction to cooking course or are building on their knowledge and cooking skills. Foods and flavor from around the world will be featured. Dates are June 24, July 8, July 22, August 5 and August 19. Classes are: 1. Kitchen safety, including knife skills; 2. Mexican spices and foods; 3. Introduction to Mediterranean spices; 4. Introduction to charcuterie-making sausage; 5. Student prepared dinner, the final class in the course. Fee for the series is $125 per person or $115 for 21 Acres’ member. Parents are invited to attend the student prepared dinner in Class 5. Fee per parent is $15.
