On Saturday, Oct. 3, the CXC squad competed at the Sunfair Invite which is held at Franklin Park in Yakima.
This meet is an all-day affair. First race went off at 9:30 a.m. and the last race went off at 4 p.m.
That makes for a long day especially for those racing at the end of the day. For four of our racers, they had an even longer day. At 7:45, they arrived at West Valley H.S. outside of Yakima, did the SAT test for 4+ hours, then got to the race site about 1 p.m. and then did their race.
If you were ever unsure whether zombies could run, the answer is yes. Certainly not as fast as when they are normal humans, but yes they can run.
Overall, this was our poorest meet of the season. We have been battling illness this week and now a couple injuries. Some of our runners weren’t just their consistent selves. All of this caught up to us.
Not to say that it was a terrible performance. The varsity boys were hoping to come away as a top 3 squad in our classification and we ended up 5th. The varsity girls were shooting for top 6 and we ended up 8th. Both squads were actually only 6 points from their desired place.
This is not to say that we didn’t have good performances. Just not as many of them as we usually have. We had three varsity boys earn medals for top 15 performances in their respective flights. They were Grant Van Valkenberg, Ben Benson and Cameron Hammontree. We also had 7 boys and 3 girls claim ribbons for being in the top 50 of the non-varsity races. Chase Bolin (one of the test takers) ran admirably to finish as our #5 boy. Our athletes of the meet are Grant Van Valkenberg, Kaden Overman, Ben Norris, Cecelia Kiesow and Kendra Mutch. Congrats to them and the others.
