Rossi(Photo courtesy of Washington State Legislature)Harris Gardner, a junior at The Overlake School in Redmond, recently spent a week at the Capitol working as a page for the Washington State Senate. Harris was one of 27 students who served as Senate pages for the seventh week of the 2017 legislative session.

He was sponsored by Sen. Dino Rossi, who represents the 45th Legislative District.

“Harris has an incredible work ethic,” said Rossi, R-Redmond. “I’m glad he was able to get some work experience and a closer look at state lawmaking.”

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail.

Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

“I had some friends who spoke highly of the page program, so I decided I would give it a shot,” Harris said when asked about why he applied to the Senate Page Program. “It has been a little taxing on my feet, but it has been a lot of fun making deliveries and learning about the legislative process!”

He is the son of Randi Hedin and Andy Gardner of Woodinville.
