Classic children’s shows fill spring line up at SSP

  • Written by Shannon Michael

What better way to introduce live theatre to children, or grow their appreciation for it, than through these three classic productions: Little Red Riding Hood, Charlotte’s Web, and Rapunzel? SecondStory Repertory Theater, based in Redmond, is doing just that beginning with Little Red Riding Hood, opening on February 14 and running through March 2.

Little Red Riding Hood stars Chelsea Moe as Little Red, and is directed by Alicia Mendez. The show will have a 7 p.m. opening night gala on February 14, then offer performances on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. through March 2.

The play tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood who lives a sheltered life with her protective mother. It’s when she needs to travel by herself through the forest to get to Grandmother’s house, that she encounters the Wolf and adventure ensues.

Next on the stage will be Charlotte’s Web, the story of Wilbur the pig and his friendship with Charlotte the spider who helps keep him from becoming bacon and pork chops. The play is based on the book of the same name by E. B. White. The production will run March 21 through April 6.

Closing out the series of children’s productions will be Rapunzel from May 2 through May 18. SecondStory Rep executive director Mark Chenovick said the cast will pay homage to the sizable Russian speaking population in the area by having part of the production spoken in Russian. SecondStory Rep’s Theater for Young Audience Series offers productions which are appropriate for grade school aged children. Families with younger children are encouraged to attend the all-ages shows on Sundays. Tickets for all performances are $10 for ages four through adult, with Sunday performances offering $5 tickets for children ages one through three, and children under age one admitted free. The theatre is located in Redmond Town Center, 16587 NE 74th St. For more or call (425) 881-6777.
