The Paramount Theatre announced its 2014-15 season of Broadway musicals last week, with several crowd pleasers in the mix.
The full season opens on December 2-7, 2014 with “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” The show originally premiered on Broadway in 2006.
Then, “Dirty Dancing” runs January 20-February 1, 2015. It is based on the classic romantic film that starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. The show had its world premiere in Sydney, Australia in 2004. Since then, it set records in advance ticket sales on London’s West End where it premiered in 2006.
A revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic “Cinderella” will run February 24-March 1, 2015. The only one of the power duo’s musicals to first be written for television, it premiered on CBS in 1957 starring Julie Andrews before moving onto the stage in London in 1958. It has been wowing audiences ever since.
“The Phantom of the Opera” returns to the Paramount April 30-May 10, 2015. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, it is based on the experiences of French author Gaston Leroux who published in 1911 “Le Fantôme de l’Opéra.” Leroux was a theatre critic who wrote reviews for the newspaper. He based the novel on stories he’d heard about the famous Paris Opera House.
Fresh from its 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, “Pippin” tours Seattle August 18-23, 2015. Originally performed on Broadway over 40 years ago, “Pippin” tells the story of a young prince on a death-defying journey to find meaning in his life.
Two additional shows can be added on to a season subscription, “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” and “Wicked.” “Beauty” will run this fall October 21-26, 2014, and “Wicked” will run July 8-August 2, 2015.
