Don’t let the title fool you; Urinetown: The Musical is a critically acclaimed, powerhouse of a musical. It has been called, “a love letter to the American musical in the form of a grenade.” Based in the tradition of the British Pantomime, it is part love story, part class struggle, part melodrama, and part social commentary – with a dash of self-aware, ironic detachment.

The show is set in a dystopian city that has been plagued by drought for 20 years. The drought has been so severe that society has banned private bathrooms, requiring everyone to conserve water by using for-profit public amenities.

Urinetown’s cast comprises 35 Woodinville High School students, from a wide variety of backgrounds – from theatre, to choir, to band, to baseball and football. The show is the final stage performance for seniors Ben Griffin (Senator Fipp), Amelia Marshall (Ms. Pennywise), and Alondra Cochran (Ensemble). The cast is supported by a pit orchestra from the WHS music department, and the technical aspects of the show, from set building and lighting to publicity, are handled by crews of students from the WHS technical theatre program. Senior technical theatre students include: Sydney Bodman (stage manager and paint head), Bryce Wimberly (master carpenter), Connor Vache (technical assistant), Daniel Ochs (sound), Mack Ohnemus (lights), Maiah Swigert and Sallie Bieterman (costumes), Amelia Marshall (hair and makeup), Jordan Bister (props) and Hailey Fulton (house manager).

The show is directed and produced by Josh Butchart; Kyra Rengstorf is the music director; Nathan Rengstorf is pit director; and WHS alumnus Katie Mitchell is choreographer.
