For homeschoolers who are considering a transition to junior high public school, PACE may serve as an excellent bridge in the last year or two of elementary school.
PACE (Parents Active in Cooperative Education)is a partnership of teachers, children and parents comitted to an enriched learning environment. PACE is a program offered for grades 1-6 at three sites in the Northshore School District: Lockwood, Wellington and Woodmoor elementaries.
The focus for the sixth graders is on personal responsibility, academic achievement and study skills. There is a high expectation for academic achievement and success, in fact 80 percent of our current PACE sixth graders have qualified for the challenge program in junior high.
The Woodmoor PACE sixth graders have many exciting learning opportunities in the upcoming 2011/2012 school year.
The sixth graders are teamed with a first grader with whom they become "buddies" throughout the school year. This fosters leadership and mentoring skills.
The science and social studies programs are highly interactive and hands on. In addition to a comprehensive curriculum, there are monthly after-school activities, such as bowling, ice skating and sledding.
Woodmoor PACE also is planning their next annual 3-day field trip called "The Grand Tour."
This year they visited Port Townsend and boarded at the charming Fort Flagler.
The students had an opportunity through Centrum Arts at Fort Worden to paint with author and illustrator Jesse Joshua Watson, author of the children’s book, "Hope for Haiti."
At the Wooden Boat Foundation, the 6th graders learned to sail on the 106-year-old Dorjun. They enjoyed classes at the Marine Science Center, swam in the local pool, visited the Pizza Factory for dinner, hosted a talent night and stretched themselves in a challenge course.
Student Isabelle Knopf commented, "The best part was playing on the beach and painting with the artist. He turned on music to inspire us and let us paint whatever we wanted and as many pictures as we wanted."
PACE at Woodmoor serves the neighborhood schools of Canyon Creek, Fernwood, Maywood Hills, Moorlands and Woodmoor elementaries. For more information, visit our website at www.NSD.org/WoodmoorPACE.
