In the first round of this year’s Iron Vintner Challenge (IVC) that took place June 6 at Willows Lodge, the secret ingredient was Copper River salmon and Jerry Riener of Guardian Cellars wowed the judges with a delectable smoked Copper River king salmon crepe with angel Beurre blanc and chive blossoms and an entrée of cedar grilled Copper River king salmon with a spicy tomato jam and spaetzle.
Celebrity judges were James Beard Award winning chef and outstanding restaurateur Tom Douglas; Maxime Bilet, chef and cookbook author of Modernist Cuisine and Thierry Rautureau, legendary chef at Rover’s.
The challenge will continue June 13 at 5:30 when Morgan Lee, Covington Cellars, will face Ross Andrew Mickel, Ross Andrew Winery.
Tickets are sold out for this round, but tickets are still available for the Championship Winemaker Dinner at Barking Frog on Wednesday, June 27 at 7 p.m.
The completion of the Iron Vintner Challenge will be the Championship Winemaker Dinner, where all four winemakers will attend and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center in Woodinville. Executive Chef Bobby Moore will step down from being emcee for the evening to prepare a four-course meal featuring the winning appetizer and entrée along with wine pairings from the 2012 Iron Vintner himself, as well as the other participating winemakers. The tickets are $135 per person.
