This New Year’s Eve, you can celebrate the old and the new all at once. Members of the classic rock bands Boston and Steppenwolf will play a show with their greatest hits at Vessel Wines in Woodinville.
Goldy McJohn, Steppenwolf’s original keyboardist, will play Steppenwolf hits such as "Born to be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Rock Me" with a new band called Born to be Wild with an "all-star lineup," band member Glen Bui said.
Vocalist Fran Cosmo, who joined Boston in the 1990s, and his son, guitarist Anton Cosmo, will play Boston’s best loved-songs, such as "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," "Foreplay/Long Time" and "Rock and Roll Band."
"They’re very well-written songs," Fran Cosmo said. "It brings back an era ... brings back memories."
Even though he and the band have gotten older, he’s still full of energy. He has a solo record coming out next spring and still rollerblades, keeping up his high school hobby of speed skating.
"I’ve got too much energy to sit around," Cosmo said. "For what? What would I get out of it?"
McJohn was one of the founding members of Steppenwolf, but the band broke up in the mid-1970s.
"They told me I was too wild and fired me," McJohn recalls.
"... We were wild, and then John [Kay, the band’s vocalist] was a businessman."
McJohn still plays blues, as well as Steppenwolf’s hits, but life has changed for him.
"It’s life in the fast lane, but it’s kind of slowed down," he said. "I’m 68, going on 69."
Two local rock bands, both composed of teenagers, will open the show at Vessel Wines — Struck Red, from Seattle, and Sin Circus, from Puyallup.
"They’re fantastic. They’re going to make everyone else stay on their toes," Bui promised.
He wants the audience to feel like family, he said, so guests will be able to meet the musicians. The event will have catered food and spirits and champagne in addition to wine.
"I wanted to make this a special experience, like a party, where the atmosphere is not very crowded," he said. "... There won’t be any sequestering of us. We’re not those kind of rock stars."
Tickets ($50 for general admission, $80 for VIP) are available through Brown Paper Tickets, at Vessel Wines or at the door the day of the event.
Doors open at 7:30 and the show begins at 9:00. For more information, call Northwest Entertainment at (360) 434-6575.
