Cascadia College’s creative arts magazine Yours Truly tied for second place in the 2017 Community College Humanities Association’s literary arts competition. The competition highlights student work from across the nation and is a unique opportunity for students to explore the publishing and promotion process.
Yours Truly students begin their work on the magazine in Fall Quarter with a call for submissions. In the Spring Quarter, the magazine is printed and distributed at an annual launch event. The creative arts magazine features poetry, prose and visual art from Cascadia students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members.
“Taking this course really pushes you out of your comfort zone. It’s like taking a real job, but instead of a salary, you get a grade,” says Cascadia student Sam Kim, who plans to major in communications and marketing.
Students study common college magazine practices, develop submission guidelines and determine roles and responsibilities on the magazine’s editorial team. During classes, students develop valuable skills in publication budgeting, scheduling, and project management.
“Yours Truly is a collaborative effort,” says Courtney Putnam, MFA, faculty advisor for Yours Truly. “Through open, engaged work, students learn the value of the arts. It’s a joy for me to witness how students thrive when given a real-world project and permission to express their own creativity.”
Yours Truly is putting out a call to the community for submissions. Submit prose, poetry or visual art beginning November 1, 2017. Last day for submissions is December 31, 2017.
