King County Fire Protection District No. 45 Prop. 1 follow-up/correction

  • Written by David B. Clark
On May 8 we at The Woodinville Weekly published a story on King County Fire Protection District No. 45 Prop. 1. During the April special election on April 24 the department did receive a majority vote and all numbers presented were accurate, but the measure will not fund, for the time being, because the majority was 59.47%. Funding for a fire district (levy lid lift and bonds) require a supermajority: at least 60% passing with a minimum of 40% turnout from the previous election. The fire district was 11 passing votes shy of hitting that 60% supermajority.
The Board of Fire Commissioners then met on May 9 for their regular monthly meeting (every second Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.) and discussed future options. Fire Chief David Burke said, “Although not formalized, it is likely that they will authorize the initiative to be placed on the November ballot.” This would be for the November general election.
We at The Woodinville Weekly apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
