The 53rd annual East-West All-Star Game took place June 30th in Moses Lake. And the Woodinville Falcons were well represented.
Mack Minnehan, Jake Kim, Michael Roth, Derek Beers and Ben Metzger all saw action for the West squad. Five Woodinville coaches also took part – Wayne Maxwell served as head coach, and he was joined by Mike Pluschke, Mike Monan, DJ Baddeley and Cory Smith.
“That might be some kind of record having so many on the roster from the same team,” Maxwell said.
The two teams consisted of the top high school seniors from around the state. The two squads arrived in Moses Lake on Monday June 26th and had four days to get ready for the game. But there were fun activities to enjoy as well. These included boating trips, visits to a water park and fun dinners. “Really enjoyable week,” Maxwell said. “The guys were able to make new friends. A lot of them going off to college. Some of them playing the final game of their careers.”
The East squad jumped up to a 10-0 lead, before the West rallied and ultimately won 20-17. Woodinville’s Mack Minnehan was named the game’s MVP.
“You don’t really know your team that well and how they are going to respond,” Maxwell said. “It has been a nice characteristic our [Woodinville players] have had the last couple of years, keeping our composure and coming back. We knew how our guys would respond. But we weren’t sure about the other guys. But they did a nice job rallying and coming back.”
Normally a linebacker, Ben Metzger got to play some H-back on offense.
“And Michael Roth had some big catches using his [tall] frame,” Maxwell said. “Anthany Smith from Mariner had a couple of nice returns and played corner for us.”
The East-West All-Star Game is played annually each summer so as to not impact the wrestling and basketball seasons.
