On Sept. 30, the CXC squad competed at the Nike Portland Cross Country meet. The meet was held at the Portland Meadows horse racing venue with the course running on the grass infield of the racetrack. This meet is a big meet with almost 150 teams (over 5,000 runners) and was a new adventure for us. Six states and a Canadian province were represented. There were four varsity races for each gender plus a couple JV and class races.
We challenged our varsity squads by running them “up a division” in the Division 1 race instead of Division 2 which is where we were originally scheduled to run. Our girls finished 18th out of the 30 teams. Elsie Dombek was our top varsity finisher getting 20th in the Division 1 race. Merging the results informally that put her about 70th place out of about 1400 runners. Our boys finished 23rd out of the 30 teams. And that was without Grant Van Valkenburg who ran as an individual in the Danner Championship race. Grant finished 30th overall which put him 35th out of about 2400 runners in a merged situation.
For this meet, we took 34 runners. 18 of them had personal bests and another four had season bests.
