The weather conditions were brutal, particularly for youngsters wearing shorts.
Bailey’s early goal, officially unassisted, was set up by a brilliant lead-pass from Falcon senior Bruce Lee who threaded the needle up the wing at the 6-minute mark.
Woodinville sophomore Ionaton Keperwajs would later knock in a back-door gimme on a penalty kick — some thought he was offsides — with 6 minutes left to close the deal in the rain-soaked rivalry game between two teams that will meet again. And again ...
It was the Vikings’ third game in four days, and endurance was a factor — with the result meaning little other than local pride for one early night.
For the respective coaches it was more of an indication of things to come as the season revs up.
Said 29-year-coach Sully Hester: “We return 14 seniors which is maybe the most I’ve ever had. More kids turned out than ever and we had to cut some guys, which is always hard and I don’t like to do.”
Returning seniors — all good players — are goalkeepers Mikey Boswell and Andrew Wildfong, Evan Pulse, Blake Hoonan, A.J. Nava, Bruce Lee, Callan Burrell, Issac Rolling, Connor Powell, Lucas Reller, James Hurst, Nick Norton, Duncan Luth and A.J. Fazzio.
Though junior Jacob Mace — the redhead who goes hard both ways — may be the best all-around player on the team.
“We’ve got a little more firepower offensively than we did last year,” Hester said.
Inglemoor coach Kevin McGibbon, acknowledging the stress of his early schedule, has his own crew he feels good about, including nineseniors: Michel Dominguez, Justin Li, Michael Corpus, Matt King, Jacob Kavanagh, Miguel Netelenbos, Lucas Miller, David Barker and Chance Fox.
Though not too many Viking seniors may start, as McGibbon promotes a younger culture. Some juniors are established and others may breakthrough: Oliver Frahling, Christan Nesselquist, Ian Schweickart are already there.
“Our thing is to have fun and get better,” he said. “We’re working on that.”
Hester thinks his squad has a chance to be pretty good.
McGibbon does, too: It’s a long season, and the rivals will meet again.
