It was about team depth, strength in numbers.

Without one athlete finishing first in any of the four events, the Woodinville gymnastics team still managed a convincing victory over Newport and Roosevelt at WHS on Wednesday to remain unbeaten on the season.

Senior co-captain Madison Engel finished second in bars and beam, fourth in floor and vault, second all around.

Newport’s Candace Ho took top honors in bars, beam and vault, finished second on floor and easily took the all around with a score of 37.4. Woodinville’s Sam Jensen finished third in the vault, Emily Paratore placed third on bars, and Candace Nelson took third on the floor. Paratore finished third all around.

“It was our first meet back since mid-December and the girls were good but not their best,” coach  Kimberly Smothermon said. “I’m proud of them for the win and for staying positive.”

Smothermon said the team has yet to perform at its very best. “They haven’t peaked yet which is a good thing. We can still clean up some stuff. These girls have a great chance at state and that remains the goal.”

The Lady Falcons’ final regular season meet takes place Thursday, Jan. 31 at home against crosstown rivals Bothell and Inglemoor.

The KingCo tournament begins two days later at Roosevelt High School.
