Falcons knock off Gonzaga Prep to Advance to State Semifinal

  • Written by Derek Johnson

Miles Mustarde remembers that frigid day in Spokane. The senior linebacker was a freshman back then. Woodinville played Gonzaga Prep in the 4A State quarterfinals in 2015. He remembers Gonzaga’s towering arrogance and the one-sided officiating that bordered on criminal. The bad taste of that bitter defeat lingered.

But after beating Gonzaga Prep last Saturday night, Mustarde felt marvelous.

“Having them come over here and getting revenge feels great,” he said.

Before you could blink, the home team had control. The Woodinville Falcons, playing Skyview in the first round of the State playoffs, scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to race out to a 21-0 lead.

The Falcons (10-1) then survived a second half rally, to prevail 34-21, at Pop Keeney Stadium last Saturday night.

Mike Monan’s Surprise visit to see Andre Dillard

Before we begin this story, there’s something you need to know about Mike Monan. Long before he became Woodinville’s offensive line coach, he played for the Washington Huskies and the legendary Don James. To this day, Monan LOVES the Dawgs.

But mention the Washington State Cougars, and Monan’s mood darkens. He’ll shoot you a look of suspicion and disdain. Make no mistake - this man hates the Crimson and Gray and everything those colors stand for.

Life, however, is about compromise. One of Monan’s prized former players is Andre Dillard, the 6’6” 310 pound lineman for Washington State. (Monan tried to steer him to UW, but it wasn’t in the cards).

Loss to Mount Si brings season to an End

There was no fairy tale ending this time. The recent surge of momentum wasn’t able to carry the Falcons any further. When this one was over, the finality hit everyone hard. Last Tuesday night, the Woodinville Falcons lost 3-1 to Mount Si, and were eliminated from the Kingco 4A Tourney.
Woodinville finished the season with a 4-5 record in conference, and 6-12 overall.

“It was definitely a heartbreaker,” senior Ashleigh Barker said. “All of the girls wanted the game. I’ve been playing with some of these girls for a long time, and knowing that it was the last time we will ever play together is very sad.”

Woodinville Wins Tune-Up by Topping Federal Way 38-0

  • Written by Derek Johnson
Noah Stifle passed for five touchdowns and Joey Johnson rushed for 102 yards as Woodinville crushed Federal Way 38-0, in a regional playoff game last Friday night at Pop Keeney Stadium.

The strangest part was losing three fumbles in the first half made no difference to the Falcons. Woodinville (9-1) took command as Stifle tossed four TD passes in the first half to four different receivers (Carter Smith, Camden Pilukas, Cage Schenck and Jackson Messmer). The Falcons led 28-0 going into halftime.
