CARNATION–It started with a simple Facebook posting.
Terrie Decker’s daughter Tawna had been diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease (the same affliction that took her father about 16 months ago) and was asking neighbors and friends to please send her cards for her Sweet 16 birthday that was coming up on March 3.
That brief request resulted in an absolute avalanche of cards and gifts which continue to arrive at their house. KOMO TV featured the Carnation family in a story, and the birthday request went worldwide. Cards have been received from all over the country and even overseas.
Terrie reported that, as of March 6, Tawna had received 1,167 cards (including one from Johnny Depp) which “are still coming in by the hundreds,” flowers, stickers, quilts, homemade hats, Minions stuff, toys, shirts, gift cards, money and a homemade Minions cake, among other things.
On Friday morning, the family was scheduled to leave for Disney World in Orlando, Florida, a trip sponsored by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Terrie posted Thursday to let people know that “Make-A-Wish” was concerned about flooding so the family was heading for a hotel so they wouldn’t miss their flight.
The family wants to thank each and every person who sent cards and gifts so that Tawna could have a memorable birthday.
