Woodinville’s 15-and-under Mickey Mantle took a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning at Lynnwood High School on Friday night, but the Bothell- based Northwest Bandits put six big runs on the board to win 7-3.
The loss puts Woodinville’s record at 13-8 this season.
It was a pitcher’s duel between Woodinville’s Jake Segresser and the Bandits’ Adam Cline through five innings with the teams locked in a 1-1 tie.
Then Cline hit Segesser with a pitch leading off the top of the sixth, and Eric Nelson followed with a two-run homer to left — a no-doubter — for a 3-1 lead.
It didn’t last long.
Segesser walked the leadoff batter, yielded a single and issued another free pass to load the bases with no outs before he was removed by coach Chris Fedor and replaced by Jake DeHoop. DeHoop was greeted with a double down the left field line that tied the game at 3-apiece.
After two ground ball outs, the Bandits delivered a two-run double and back-to-back run scoring singles to push it to 7-3.
Woodinville loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but could not produce a run — let alone four to tie.
Nelson went 2-for-3 and knocked in all three Woodinville runs.
