Benefit fundraiser to aid local parrot rescue groups

  • Written by Lisa Allen
Three parrot rescue groups are holding their first annual benefit auction and BBQ at Macaw Rescue & Sanctuary near Carnation.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 27.

"This is a rare opportunity for the public to see what we are doing," said Bob Dawson of Macaw Rescue & Sanctuary. "These places are usually closed to the public."

Dawson has rescued over 400 birds from people who can no longer care for them or from ex-breeders.

"These tough economic times force people to give up their birds," he said.

Dawson explained that the birds are kept together in groups in as natural conditions as possible, "so they can keep each other company and take care of themselves."

The BBQ begins at 1 p.m. and the auction at 3:30. Those attending can enjoy chicken/ribs or a vegetarian option with trimmings, refreshments and dessert.

The other rescue groups involved are Mollywood Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary and Zazu’s House Parrot Sanctuary.
