This distinctive position offers students the opportunity to interact with community leaders, develop and refine leadership and public speaking skills, and gain knowledge of school board issues and procedures. In addition, the position also offers these students the chance to experience actual, legal policymaking first-hand as well as expand their understanding and respect for public service.
Both Austin and Kylie will attend all regular board meetings while school is in session, but not the executive sessions. During the scheduled meetings once a month they will provide reports to the school board under the agenda item entitled, “Student Representative Report.” Their information will include Cedarcrest High School student activities, topics and general concerns.
Austin and Kylie will also participate in board training sessions, when invited, such as the WSSDA annual conference and the WSSDA Legislative Conference in Olympia. During their time in Olympia, they will also have the opportunity to meet with state legislators and advocate for legislation.
