Learn all this and more in the upcoming course, “Backyard Farming, Spring Edition,” on five consecutive Thursday evenings, beginning February 14.
The series is scheduled just in time for you to start a garden that will yield beautiful results this spring and summer.
Instructor for the course is Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Wheat who teaches ecology, urban farming and systems thinking in the University of Washington’s Program on the Environment.
Dr. Wheat was one of the founders of the UW Student Farm and currently operates a small, integrated vegetable farm on Whidbey Island.
Course sessions include:
1. Visioning the Backyard Farm - Plant Biology 101, Figure out what to grow.
2. Preparing the Soil - How to build and sustain soil fertility.
3. Compost Gold – Create an easy system to nourish plants with free material.
4. Making Great Choices – How to select seeds, starts and transplants.
5. Timing is Everything – Design a planting calendar to get the most out of space.
The course runs five consecutive Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., February 14 through March 14.
Fee is $159, or register before February 10 for the early bird rate of $149.
