The 6-5 senior forward scored 39 points, including 20 in a white-hot first quarter, as the top-ranked Bulldogs took the whipping stick to second-ranked Bothell 93-69 in the KingCo 4A title game. Haymond knocked down seven of eight shots right from jump street, including his first three from long range as Garfield grabbed a 28-21 lead after one quarter. At halftime the Bulldogs led 53-45 as defense was an afterthought, and Haymond had 27. KingCo leading scorer and MVP Zach LaVine picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter, though Bothell coach Ron Bollinger left him on the floor. Garfield led 69-58 after three and then went on a fourth quarter scoring spree to win by 24.
“Teams play you harder in the playoffs,” he said. Garfield, 22-1, beat Bothell 86-71 a month ago, as LaVine went for 35. Since losing its opener in November by one point to Todd Beamer, the Bulldogs have reeled off 22 straight victories. Garfield will take on the No. 5 seed from District 3/4 in regionals at Jackson High School in Mill Creek at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Wroten is on the Memphis Grizzlies’ roster and Roy is with the Minnesota Timberwolves. With no games scheduled during the NBA’s all-star weekend, the local legends returned home.
