On April 13, the Washington State Cheer Coaches Association named first year Cedarcrest High School cheer coach, Jackie Boak, as its Rising Star recipient for 2013.
The Rising Star Award is given to a coach who has been coaching their squad for two years or less.
Lori Leslie: “The cheer program has always been a strong one at CHS, but this past year Jackie initiated changes to make it even better. I was impressed how Jackie respected and treated each girl as not just a cheerleader, but as a whole person. Jackie included the following statement in an email to parents. “…I tell the girls all the time, ‘most of your biggest life lessons will be learned during these high school years and on this cheer team.’ Funny that cheer CAN be so helpful in shaping a young woman’s view of the world…” To me, her words sum up what an amazing person Jackie is and how thankful I am to have her as my daughter’s cheer coach.”
Kim Korn: “One of the areas that Jackie improved was increasing the visibility of the CHS Cheer program in the Duvall and Carnation communities. She organized a highly successful Red Wolves Kiddie Cheer camp which was led by the cheerleaders as a fundraiser in the month of July. The girls who participated in the camp were then invited to cheer with the squad during one of the CHS football games. This past month Jackie organized a 10-week cheer class for grades K-8 to be held at the three elementary schools. This class is teaching the girls not only basic cheers, chants and dances, but also a particular life skill each week, such as dealing with peer pressure, getting good grades and staying organized.”
Savannah Egger, CHS junior and cheer captain: “Jackie Boak has changed our program around entirely for the better. We never used to be a co-ed squad, but thanks to Jackie, this squad is the best Cedarcrest has ever seen. Not only are we better at stunts and cheering/dancing thanks to her, we are now also the squad that people want to be a part of. She has supported us in any situation and it is so easy to go talk to her if you’re having a bad day and instantly have those feelings wash away ... Jackie has been there through thick and thin, standing by us at every second. She has inspired us to be more than just what we think we’re capable of. Jackie is not just our coach; she is our mentor, a guide, someone to look up to.”
