41st annual Duvall Civic Club Plant Sale planned for May 11

  • Written by Barb Olsen
“The Civic Club Plant Sale is part of Duvall history,” Civic Club president Judi Chapman says as she tells the story of the beginnings of the tradition, which started 41 years ago.

“It began when the club needed a fundraiser and someone brought seed packets to a club meeting and said, ‘plant these and we’re going to have a plant sale.’ That’s how it got started, from very modest beginnings — planting a few seeds in some pots.”

Now, more than four decades later, the 41st annual Duvall Civic Club Plant and Garden Art Sale will be Saturday, May 11 — the day before Mother’s Day — from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  You’ll find it in the parking lot behind the old Duvall Library, along Riverside Avenue.

The sale features rows and rows of perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, garden starts, and blooming baskets along with garden art, art work, food and the chance to buy raffle tickets to win a Raffle Barrel filled with nearly $1,000 in gifts and gift certificates donated by generous local businesses. The Friends of the Duvall Library is sponsoring the raffle.

And even if your thumb is decidedly un-green, you’ll find plenty of springtime delight at this event, where neighbors and friends cross paths after a long and rainy winter.

Some of the proceeds from the plant sale go to fund two scholarships for Cedarcrest High School students. The Civic Club also dedicates some of the proceeds to help support community services, such as the SnoValley Senior Center, Hopelink, the Duvall Library, the Riverview School District and Summerstage performances.

The event is kid-friendly. For those youngsters looking for something handmade to give Mom on Mother’s Day, local librarian Katherine Huber will help kids pot marigolds
