Ste. Michelle’s ‘Staycation’ — an afternoon of food, wine and drool-worthy cars

  • Written by Deborah Stone
Memorial Day weekend is usually a busy travel time, with roads and airports clogged, as people head out of town for a holiday escape.

Rather than joining the hordes as they make their mass exodus this year, consider the alternative — a staycation.

With the wealth of opportunities in our region, there’s always plenty to do, indoors and out.

Locally, Chateau Ste. Michelle is holding its own “Staycation.”

Now in its third year, the event has emerged as one of the top Memorial weekend events in the region.

With 10 of the area’s hottest food trucks and Chateau Ste. Michelle’s award-winning wines, it’s a magnet for food and wine aficionados.

But, it’s also a luxury car lovers’ delight, as some of the rarest and most exotic automobiles are on site.

Courtesy of Exotics@RTC, the vehicles range from Ferraris and Porsches to Lamborghinis and other numerous classic cars.

“We typically will have over 100 cars at the event,” says Tom Nault of Exotics@RTC. “It’s highly weather dependent and if it’s an especially nice day, we could see a number a little closer to 200.”

Nault explains he never knows what will show up until the day of the event, but that it’s common to have cars that are valued well over $10 million.

He adds, “A sure bet is the Bugatti Veyron Vitesse, which just set a world speed record (254.04 mph). It’s very rare at $2.6 million a copy.”

The first year Exotics@RTC participated in Staycation, it was a test to see if the event had any appeal to the owners.

“It did,” notes Nault. “Attendance was much larger than we were expecting and it just blew up from there.”

Lynda Eller, communications director for Chateau Ste. Michelle, comments that the winery was equally amazed at the number of people who came to the event.

She says, “It’s grown in such a short time. We had about 2,500 people attend last year. It’s really one of our favorite and most popular events, with something for everyone — wine lovers, foodies and car enthusiasts. It’s fun, relaxed and there is no admission fee.”

She adds, “Food and wine are available at an additional cost.”

This year, the event boasts 10 food trucks, including Skillet Street Food, Marination Mobile, Parfait Organic Artisan Ice Cream, Now Make Me a Sandwich, Snout & Co., Street Donuts, Veraci Pizza, Dante’s Inferno Dogs, Jemil’s Big Easy and Fish Basket.

So, this Memorial weekend, leave the highways and airports to all the frenzied holiday travelers, and grab a blanket and head to the winery for a fun day of food, wine and luxury cars that will make you drool with envy.
