Volunteers shine at the 17th annual Rise and Shine Awards breakfast

  • Written by by Connie Berg

Did you know that every spring, the Snoqualmie Valley Community Network (SVCN) recognizes outstanding volunteers whose actions, over the past year, have helped create a caring, resilient Snoqualmie Valley community?

Until this year, I didn’t fully understand what the Rise and Shine Awards were all about. I wanted to nominate someone this year. Through the nomination process I learned that community members and organizations nominate volunteers to be recognized and a selection committee from SVCN reviews and chooses the recipients for awards. Award recipients are recognized at the annual Rise & Shine breakfast.

When I arrived at the Sno-Valley Senior Center in Carnation, where the Rise and Shine Awards breakfast is held, I was amazed at the number of vehicles that were parked outside.  As I entered the center, I could quickly see that this was not just a small little breakfast for a few select people, this was a major event.

Actually, it was a major “inspiring” event for all who attended. I was invited to the awards breakfast because I nominated Helen Hoenig for a Rise and Shine Award.  Helen has been picking up trash in and around Duvall for several months.  She has made such an impact on our community not only by making Duvall a much cleaner town but also by inspiring others to clean up trash as well.  Helen was selected to receive a Rise and Shine Award, along with numerous other recipients.

As the awards were handed out, I was overwhelmed by the amount of time and commitment that all of the recipients had contributed.
There was story after story of tremendous generosity and self sacrifice from one after another dedicated volunteers. The recipients ranged in ages from students to senior citizens. I was a little awestruck by some of the stories I heard. They made me want to give more and continue to help make a difference in my community.

The process for nominating a volunteer is simple.

Choose someone in our local community who is making a difference through their volunteer work. Fill out a nomination form with a brief description of what your nominee has done. Submit the form online through the SVCN website.

If your nominee is selected, you will receive an email and an invitation to the Rise and Shine Awards breakfast.

At the breakfast, tell the attendees why you nominated your nominee. It is such a rewarding process for both the nominee and the person who nominated them. I hope that next spring you will take the time to nominate someone in your community.

The following is a post from the Snoqualmie Valley Community Network Facebook page that I wanted to share:
“Kudos to all the wonderful volunteers in our valley and to SVCN for helping celebrate their accomplishments at the Rise N Shine breakfast.  About 150 people attended the breakfast to honor the many great efforts of our valley volunteers in schools, in the community, the shelters, Boy Scouts, arts and much more.  What an awesome place to live!”
