If you’ve driven through downtown Bothell in the past few weeks, you’ve noticed the SR 522 realignment is proceeding quickly and the widening of SR 527 has moved into high gear.
The realignment is scheduled to shift from the current road to the new road on August 12, if all goes according to plan, according to Ryan Roberts, supervising engineer for the City of Bothell.
The Crossroads realignment project costs an estimated $60 million. “That total cost, which includes all stages of planning and construction, is still on target but will probably end up costing less,” said Roberts.
The realigned SR 522 is now paved, sidewalks and curbs are almost completed, and traffic lights and streetlights have been installed. The streetlights, while looking vintage, are quite modern with energy efficient LED light bulbs.
Drivers can expect major lane closures through the construction area from 9 p.m. on August 9 until 5 a.m. on August 12. During the closures, SR 522 will only have one lane open in each direction from Hall Road to Kaysner Way, and southbound traffic on NE 180th Street will be detoured to 98th Ave. NE or Bothell Way NE.
Businesses in the affected areas will be accessible during the weekend closures.
Beginning August 12, the former SR 522 roadway will be temporarily renamed Local Access Road and will only be accessible one-way going eastbound between 98th Ave. NE and Bothell Way NE (SR 527). Drivers will also encounter temporary work zones on 98th Ave. NE for roadway reconstruction.
In addition, no westbound traffic will be allowed through the Bothell Way/Main Street intersection. Meanwhile, 101st Ave. NE will also be closed from Main Street to SR 522 to reconstruct the roadway. And, through traffic on City Park Road will not be allowed.
Access to the Park at Bothell Landing will be from the new 98th Ave. NE and 101st Ave. NE intersections. Bus riders will find temporary bus stops placed in each direction on SR 522, west of 98th Ave. NE.
The widening project has begun for the southern end of SR 527 in downtown Bothell from just south of NE 188th Street by the Northshore Pool to where it will connect to the new SR 522 alignment.
The Bothell Crossroads project is slated for completion in March 2014.
