2013ColdTurkeyChampsLed by the prolific scoring of power forward Mia Hughes, the Woodinville Lady Falcons won the 2013 Cold Turkey Tournament (Silver Division) over Thanksgiving weekend.

"Our passing has really improved," Woodinville coach Tim Christian said. "We’re finding girls that are open and we are getting open shots as a result. We are a very athletic team."

Woodinville (5-0), opened the tournament with a 30-25 win over Eastside Catholic, in which Hughes scored all 30 of her team’s points.

Then came the dramatic finish against High Definition from Yakima.

"We were up by three and the other team made a buzzer beater 3-point shot," Hughes said. "A lucky shot at the buzzer. We were freaking out because we didn’t know if we were going to beat them. We went into overtime and made five points and ended up winning the game."

As the Falcons advanced to the semi-finals, the drama ratcheted up. Trailing Meridian of Bellingham by one point with seconds left in the game, the Falcons employed full court pressure to steal the ball and make the electrifying shot to win the game, 23-22. On the final day of the tournament, Woodinville knocked off Inglemoor 25-19, to win the title.

By becoming Cold Turkey Champions, the Lady Falcons earned a spot in the State championship in March.

But with much basketball left to be played before then, coach Christian assessed his team’s strengths.

"We’ve got a very strong team this year," he said. "We’ve got Mia in the post and Erin Christian and Daisy Dunning as our main guards. They both play either guard position and are interchangeable. Like I said, we’ve very athletic."
