The following students made the academic dean’s list at Azusa Pacific University. They were honored for a spring semester 2010 academic standing of a 3.5 or better grade-point average.

• Lake Forest Park

Berit E. Anderson, a global studies major; Brett E. DeYager, an applied health major

• Woodinville

Jacqueline Conforto, a marketing major; Melissa M. Lund, a psychology major; Alicia R. Orrico, a psychology major

• Kenmore

Michael P. Schneider, a youth ministries major

Western Washington University student Jordan Bridges, son of Larry and Dorothy Bridges of Woodinville, received a $1,402.80 Ivy Roth Memorial Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Ivy Roth Memorial Plastics Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in plastics engineering technology or a related major. Applicants must show initiative and motivation to study and contribute within the field of plastics. Bridges, a senior at WWU, has earned a 3.1 GPA. He is planning to graduate in winter 2012 with a degree in plastics engineering technology.

Bridges was team captain of WWU’s human-powered submarine team and activities coordinator of SPE/SAMPE WWU student chapter.

His professional goals include working in the production and design of special effects equipment to be used in film.

Lyle Rudnicki of The First Tee of Greater Seattle has been selected to play in the Home Care & Hospice First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, an official Champions Tour event that will be held September 3-5 during Labor Day weekend and televised nationally on Golf Channel.

Rudnicki (16) of Woodinville, attends Redmond High School and has been playing golf for nine years and carries a handicap of 4. He has been a model participant as well as a mentor to younger members at his First Tee Chapter.

The Home Care & Hospice First Tee Open at Pebble Beach will air on Golf Channel Friday and Saturday, September 3-4 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. ET and 7-9:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 5.

Jennifer Lazear, from Woodinville and a student at Texas Christian University, is currently traveling aboard the MV Explorer with 700 students on the Semester at Sea Summer 2010 voyage. The voyage travels through the Mediterranean immersing students in cultural, educational and personal experiences.

Wren Lynberg, a 14-year-old Snohomish student who attends Interlake High School in Bellevue, is one of 60 students who attended the seventh annual THINK Summer Institute (July 10-July 31), a three-week summer program on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. The goal of the THINK Summer Institute is to provide profoundly gifted students a challenging academic summer program and the opportunity to earn transferable college credits.

Brian J. Safstrom of Woodinville, a member of the class of 2010, has been named to the honor roll at Phillips Academy for the spring term.

Peter Joseph Borschowa of Woodinville graduated with honors from the Milwaukee School of Engineering at the end of spring quarter. He received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.

vvtamifallsTami Allen Leib, of Duvall, Wash., has graduated from Lake Washington Technical College School of Nursing with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing. She is now a Registered Nurse. She previously earned a bachelor of arts degree in history from Washington State University and is a Tolt High School graduate.

Christopher Somogyi, class of 2011 at Connecticut College and a resident of Woodinville, has been named to the dean’s honors list for the 2010 spring semester.

In addition to being named to the dean’s list at St. Olaf College, Bjorn Mellem was also the recipient this past spring of a prestigious award at the college: The Great Conversation Student of the Year.

The "Great Conversation" is a great books humanities program at St. Olaf. The award is given to that student who best expresses the intellectual ideals at the heart of the program.

Bjorn is the son of Robert and Christine Mellem.

The College of Business and Economics at the University of Idaho has recognized Danielle Marie Madden of Woodinville as the Outstanding Senior in Marketing for the spring 2010 semester.

The Bear Creek School was awarded the Scholastic Cup for the WIAA 2B classification for the second year in a row. Bear Creek earned nine team/activity scholastic championships this year and sent several teams each season to state championship competitions which earned the school a total of 1,740 points. Head of School Patrick Carruth states, "We are honored to receive this award which continues The Bear Creek School student-athlete tradition of pursuing wholeness in mind and body through academic and athletic excellence."

The following nine varsity teams and activities earned academic state championships: band, boys basketball, boys soccer, boys track & field, choir, forensics, girls cross country, girls tennis, and girls track & field.

Bear Creek sports teams enjoyed success on the court/field/track as well. In the fall, four teams qualified for their state tournaments which led to an 8th place finish for volleyball and a 2nd place finish for boys soccer.

In the winter season, the boys basketball team placed fifth at the state championships for the second time in three years.

This spring saw four golfers heading for the links at state returning with a 7th place individual medal and a 2nd place team finish for the boys. The boys doubles tennis pair of Meyer/Imam played their way into the championship match at state, returning with second place medals.

The track and field team sent their largest-ever team to the state track meet and came home with medals in three relays and five individual events, including Madelyn Magee’s state championship in high jump.

Brian J. Safstrom of Woodinville has been named to the honor roll at Phillips Academy for the winter term.

Emily Claire Dueker of Woodinville was named to Pacific University’s spring 2010 dean’s list.

Erin Elizabeth Hendrix of Bothell graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Class of 2010.

Hendrix graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English and a minor in religious studies. She graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.90-4.0 GPA).

Woodinville residents Linda Gould and her husband Joseph Aquilino recently participated in the Mastiff Club of America National Show in Eugene, Ore. Their 8-year-old English mastiff, Ch. Stellar’s Moonlight Dancer (Carmen), won first place in Veteran Sweepstakes Bitches age 8-to-10-years class and Veterans AKC Bitches age 8-to-10-years. Besides winning a first place ribbon, MCOA medallion and show logo drinking glasses, Carmen also received a cash award for the Veterans Sweepstakes class which she will donate to her favorite charity, Homeward Pets in Woodinville. Carmen encourages her friends and neighbors to also contribute to Homeward Pets and often participates in their fund-raising activities. Additionally, Carmen was chosen last year to be featured in the 2010 Garden State Mastiff Fancier’s fund raising calendar. She appears as the featured photo for the month of June. Carmen gets two daily walks in her Woodinville neighborhood and is in great shape for a veteran mastiff.
Erin Elizabeth Hendrix, a resident of Bothell, was awarded dean’s list honors for academic achievement during the spring 2010 semester at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Bothell residents, Borislav Kushnir (juris doctor in law, Cum Laude) and Christina Y. Ahn, (bachelor of science in communication), have received degrees from Boston University.

Fiona G. Sheridan-McIver, a member of the Class of 2010 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, was named to the dean’s list for her outstanding academic achievement during spring semester. The daughter of Terry McIver and Megan Sheridan of Lake Forest Park, she is majoring in government.

Bjorn Mellem from Woodinville has been named to the dean’s list at St. Olaf College. His parents are Robert and Christine Mellem. Bjorn is majoring in mathematics physics.

Whitney Oviatt of Carnation, has been named to the dean’s list at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, for the spring 2010 semester.

Priya Santhanam of Bothell received a doctor of philosophy degree from the Graduate School of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., at its 165th commencement ceremony.

Lea Shim of Bothell, daughter of Mong L. Shim and Pauline Shim, was named to the merit list of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University in Oxford, Ga., for the 2010 spring semester.

The following Gonzaga University students from the Northshore area either completed their undergraduate studies or are on track to complete their degree requirements in 2010.

Kelsie Axelrod of Redmond has been named to the dean’s list at Bentley University for the spring 2010 semester. She is a sophomore majoring in marketing.

Laurel Turnquist of Woodinville has been named to the dean’s list at Columbia College Chicago.

Jamie Peterson of Woodinville graduated in May from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind. Jamie, daughter of Patricia and James Peterson, received a bachelor of arts degree in English literature and writing.

Woodinville native Erin Fisher had a tremendous season as the starting centerfielder for the Fordham University softball team. Fisher won All-Mid-Atlantic First Team accolades by Louisville Slugger ® and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
