It was an uphill grind from the start for the Blue Train.

Bothell kicked off to open the Class 4A state football game against Bellarmine Prep at Mount Tahoma Stadium under warm blue skies on Saturday in Tacoma, and it was run back for a 91-yard touchdown.

Just like that.

Bellarmine would go on to win 35-30.

The Cougars, misfiring on offense when it really counted, chased the Lions all day at their place.

Bothell took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter, on a pass from Ross Bowers to a wide open Jared Berry, but it was short-lived.

Bellarmine, behind  6-foot-4, 228 pound University of Colorado quarterback recruit  Sefo Liufau, responded with short runs and wide open passes to make it 28-17 at the half.

On the first play after halftime, Bothell’s Danny Wilson fumbled and Bellarmine recovered and scored later to make it 35-17.

Bothell did not run and hide.

Bowers found Berry again for a score and found Wilson on a screen to make it 35-30 with 2:24 remaining with an obvious onside kick to come.

The kick was bounced appropriately, but, somehow, amidst a scrum, was recovered by Bellarmine, and they ran the clock out.

Said Cougar coach Tom Bainter, biting his lip: “They made plays and we didn’t, it’s that simple. Give them credit. I can’t remember a lot of their mistakes and we had some opportunities we let slip through our hands and that’s the way it goes. This time of year you can’t do that. You gotta play almost perfect football … and we were were far from that today.”

For the 4th straight year, the Timbercrest boys tennis team has won the Northshore School District tennis championship.

The Wolves were ravenous this year winning 59 out of 63 individual matches, and remaining undefeated as a team for the past four seasons.

Lead by veteran 9th graders Andrew Szot (9-0) and Max Wing (8-1) playing singles, the Wolves only 7th graders, Cole Stafford and Eric Yang (8-1) were solid at first doubles.

The undefeated doubles teams of Tyler Borjeson and Andrew Campton (9-0) and Duncan Long and Jonathan McCuistion (9-0) helped make it a near perfect season for the Wolves.

Timbercrest boys also swept the year end district individual tournament in head to head competition against the districts top tennis players.  Andrew Szot took first place in singles and Max Wing took second.

The team of Cole Stafford and Eric Yang took first place in doubles with Tyler Borjeson and Andrew Campton finishing second.

It doesn’t happen very often, but a Woodinville tennis player will play in the state tournament — which oddly enough takes place in the spring in eastern Washington because of more favorable weather conditions at that time.

Falcon senior Nate Billett, by way of a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Snohomish’s Andrew Ivellia at regionals last week, is headed to the big show.

Woodinville coach Jay McGinness, who’s been there since the school began operations in 1983, could not accurately say how many times that happened before.

“I can’t find all my past records,” McGinness said, “but I think Nate is only the second or third player to qualify for state from WHS.”

Billett went 9-2 in league play, with losses to Aman Manji of Skyline and Oscar Burney of Garfield — who later became the KingCo Tournament’s first and second place finishers.

McGinness was asked about Billet’s game: “Nate’s a very skilled, patient, and intelligent player. He continually analyzes and assesses his opponent’s strengths and weaknesses during his match in order to adjust his own style to improve his chances of winning.

“He can toy with his opponent and then pounce at the opportune time to win the point.”

The coach spoke highly of Billett’s off the court skills: “He’s a fine student and an all around good guy,” McGinness said. “His leadership, talent and supportive nature were a few of the qualities that earned him the role as team co-captain with Ben Schetterer. His challenge now is to keep his game in order to be match-ready for the state tournament in May.”

That tournament will take place at Richland & Hanford High Schools and Columbia Basin Racquet Club May 24-25.

It must have been a long ride back to Tacoma.

Bothell recovered three Curtis fumbles and intercepted three passes en route to a 31-3 Viking season-ender at Pop Keeney Stadium under steady rain on Saturday night.

The Blue Train horn whistled early.

Derek Peterson returned the opening kickoff 42 yards to the Curtis 45 and three plays later Danny Wilson scampered in from the 19  to get on the board with only 30 ticks taken off the clock.

After a Curtis field goal, Cougar kicker Rilyn Gherardini drilled a 42-yarder and Wilson scored another on a 4-yarder to make it 18-3 at the half.

Curtis would never score again.

Wilson, the senior speedster, was 15-for-85 on the ground with 2 TDs — pedestrian numbers for him but he was keyed on heavily by Curtis and suffered bouts of leg cramps.

He now has scored 20 touchdowns on the season.

Senior linebacker Drew Williams had a monster game: nine tackles, two fumble recoveries and a pick.

Senior defensive end Aaron Wilks had six tackles and a pick-six off a screen pass on the third play of the second half to make it 25-3, effectively cutting Curtis’ heart out.

The Cougars held the Vikings to 55 yards passing.

“I’m really proud of our defense,” Bothell coach Tom Bainter said. “They played a great football game and that’s the kind of game you need in the playoffs.”

Bothell (6-4) now travels to Mount Tahoma High School either Friday or Saturday to take on Bellarmine Prep (9-1), 45-6 winners over Edmonds-Woodway, as the Class 4A round of 16 begins.

Date and time were yet to be determined at press time.
