Local athletes compete in Special Olympics
The 1995 Washington Special Olympics Fall Sports Tournament, featuring more than 1,000 athletes from across the state, were held Nov. 18-19.
The event included competition in volleyball, bowling, long distance running/walking, and roller skating (figure and speed skating).
Local teams competing included the Monroe Strikers, Woodinville Falcons (bowling), and Redmond Parks Redwings (volleyball).
Each of the four sports included Unified divisions, in which athletes with and without developmental disabilities played together on the same team.
Unified Sports, the fastest-growing program within Special Olympics, has resulted in many mutually beneficial school- and community-based partnerships, organizers said.
Participating athletes qualified for the tournament through local and regional competitions across the state.
