King County Districting Committee sets meeting schedule
A bi-partisan districting committee will meet almost weekly on Tuesdays between Mar. 12 and May 14 to make adjustments to the King County Council district map.
The meetings will take place between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. in the Southwest Conference Room on the 12th Floor of the King County Courthouse, Seattle. For more information, call 296-1685.
Under the King County charter, the districting committee holds sole authority to determine district boundaries, and the districting plan becomes effective once the committee files it with the clerk of the County Council.
The charter requires the committee to complete the map and file it with the clerk no later than May 15, 1996.
The charter states that council districts "shall correspond as nearly as practical with the boundaries of election precincts, municipalities, and census tracts."
The charter also instructs the districting committee to "produce districts with compact and contiguous territory, composed of economic and geographic units and approximately equal in population."
