Bothell man dies in shootout

shootout death by Jeff Switzer
Michael Richard Heaney, 48, of Bothell, died early Mar. 7 at Harborview Medical Center after a shootout the night before with Snohomish County police in the 20400 block of Bothell-Everett Highway.
Police were responding to several 9-1-1 calls from neighbors of shots fired at 9 p.m. on Mar. 6, and one woman who said a suicidal man had called her to say goodbye.
Jan Jorgensen, spokesperson for Snohomish County police, said Heaney was firing randomly and had fired a round at an occupied vehicle when police arrived. Emergency response crews evacuated 80 people from the area and attempted to set up negotiations with Heaney.
During those negotiations, Heaney told police he wanted to die. Heaney was standing near the patio door of his residence when a member of the emergency response team saw Heaney raise his assault type rifle into a firing position. The officer fired one round, which struck Heaney in the stomach. Crews immediately entered and administered first aid. Heaney was then airlifted to Harborview where he died later that morning of the gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Everett Police will be investigating the incident. The officer who shot Heaney is on paid leave pending that investigation.
