News from the Metro/King County Council
by Louise Miller, District 3 Councilmember and Vice Chair
The Council is still trying to conclude the first phase of our courtroom security program that will screen visitors to the main building downtown and all the district courts in the suburban communities.
Not including capital costs, the annual bill for operating the screening will cost $2.2 million. Most of this money is for the personnel who handle the equipment and monitoring. We still have not reached a final conclusion on whether we'll use contract services or county employees. We also still need to decide the method for screening employees who work in the court buildings.
The National Football League representatives will be arriving in King County this week to discuss the issues they have with regard to their view of improvements need to the Kingdome. They may be surprised to find that recent improvements include not only the roof and ceiling, but also totally remodeled locker rooms, new playing surfaces, state of the art diamond TV screen and electronics system, plus other internal upgrades to the operating systems. In the past 1 1/2 years, we've spend over $65 million on these improvements.
