Linda Fankhauser crossing the finish line at last year's "Race for the Cure."
The local celebration of National Cancer Survivors's Day will be held June 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Redhook Ale Brewery in Woodinville. The Celebration of Life is a free event for cancer survivors and their families and friends.
The day will feature an art display by survivor Pamela Hill, door prizes, a roving magician, a balloon maker, a T'ai Chi Chih demonstration, and healing art.
Also, survivors will share their stories, and the second DeShazo Award will be presented. Claude DeShazo, M.D. will honor a cancer survivor who has been an inspiration and help to other survivors.
This year's recipient will be Linda Fankhauser, a former resident of Woodinville. A breast cancer survivor, Fankhauser has used her experience to help other women as a volunteer with support groups, as an educator helping women improve their breast health, and as an advocate for those battling breast cancer.
As a member of the Eastside Breast Health Partnership, she helped acquire four breast cancer screening sites for low-income women on the Eastside and spearheaded development of a comprehensive resource guide to be used by women statewide when they are diagnosed with breast cancer.
