YMCA has athletic activities for kids

   The YMCA's HomeZone program, located at C.O. Sorenson School, 13209 NE 175th Street, Woodinville, is specifically designed for elementary-age children who are being schooled at home. Coaches, swim instructors, and artists are available to supplement a child's at-home learning. Registration begins Aug. 20 at Sorenson. Garden walk and lecture at Arboretum

   Urban Horticulture is offering a walk through the Washington Park Arboretum to look at hydrangeas on Aug. 14, 10 a.m. to noon ($5). Brendan Little will speak and show slides of the Gardens of Ireland, Aug. 13, 7:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $10. Pre-egistration is necessary.

Puyallup holds quilt challenge

   A new contest will be held at the 1996 Puyallup Fair, the "Do the Puyallup" Quilt Challenge. The last day for pre-registration is August 15th. Quilters over 16 years of age may create a wall quilt using the theme "Do the Puyallup" as their inspiration. When the pre-registration is received, a 12" x 12" square of fabric will be provided to begin the challenge. Additional fabrics, shapes, techniques, and embellishments are of the quilter's choice. Win a blue ribbon for your jam

   Enter the jam and jelly competition at the Western Washington Fair Sept. 6-22. Entries must be submitted Aug. 23, 24 or 25. Pre-register by Sept. 1. Call 841-5017 for information.

Lions sponsor new service club

   The Woodinville Lions' Club is forming a Leo Club, a service-oriented youth group. The new club, which is advised by Lion's Club members, will meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month in the evening. The location has not yet been determined. For information, call 488-1772.

Indoor gardening class offered

   The City of Redmond Parks and Recreation Dept. will present a class on indoor house plants Aug. 1, 7 to 8 p.m. Learn proper watering, feeding, and lighting. The fee is $8 for Redmond residents and $10 for non-residents. Preregistration is required. Call 556-2300 for information.

Free vanpool for a month
